We continually monitor billion-dollar turnover companies and how their data science departments develop over time. The current database consists of more than 2,500 companies and is updated monthly.
We divided the companies into three buckets based on their team size. The fastest-growing companies in each bucket make it to the Top 100 Fastest-Growing AI Teams.
Based on the number of team members, companies are divided into three categories:
Small: 20 - 49 team members
Medium: 50 - 250 team members
Large: +250 team members
The growth rate is based on a three-month basis and consists of the total number of individual contributors and managers. The growth rate is categorized from High to Very High to Exceptional.
The management ratio indicates proximity to the top management. This metric is calculated by the total amount of managers divided by the full size of the team. Companies are categorized as:
Relatively vertical (Higher management ratio)
Relatively horizontal (Lower management ratio)
Vertical organizations often have smaller teams and layers of middle management. Horizontal organizations often have larger teams with more autonomous employees. Both types of organizations have their strengths and weaknesses and depend on what work environment is preferred.
